Are you ready to meet the new mandatory liquor training requirements effective 1 May 2009?

The Department of Justice Licensing, Regulation and Alcohol Strategy have issued a Section 33 notice on all licensees requiring them to train all staff in SITHFAB009A – Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA).

Licensees are required to train new staff within four (4) weeks of commencing their employment. Existing staff as at 1 May 2009 will have a period three (3) months to complete their training.

The course is designed for entry level with no pre-requisites and course duration of approximately three (3) hours.

So…. what is RSA?

Responsible practices must be undertaken in any workplace situation where alcohol is served, sold & supplied, including all types of hospitality venues, retail liquor outlets and tourism venues such as wineries, breweries and distilleries.

The RSA course develops the skills and knowledge required to responsibly sell, serve or supply alcohol and to satisfy the requirements under territory legislation including:

 Sell, serve or supply alcohol responsibly.
 Assist customers to drink within appropriate limits.
 Assess alcohol affected customers and identify customers to whom sale, service or supply must be refused.
 Refuse to provide alcohol.

Will all my staff be required to do training?

The requirements for training apply to all levels of sales personnel involved in the sale, service or supply and promotional service of alcohol in licensed premises, including the licensee. Those selling, serving and supplying alcohol may include food and beverage attendants; retail liquor sales persons; winery, brewery and distillery cellar door staff; supplier sales representatives and the licensee.
